Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) sold a total of 62,996 factory-fitted CNG vehicles last year, a growth of 23% over previous year when it sold 51,215 units.
The contribution of CNG powered vehicles to total sales of the company increased to 5.4% from 4.9% during the two comparable years. As many as six models of Maruti Suzuki today are powered by CNG while five models were offered on CNG last year.
Maruti Suzuki offers six dual fuel (CNG+Petrol) models namely Alto, Alto K-10, Celerio, Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga. The CNG variants of Alto K-10 and Celerio were launched in 2014-15.
In cities like Delhi and Mumbai where distribution infrastructure is in place and CNG for automobiles is available almost 50% sales of Wagon R, Eeco and Ertiga are accounted for by the CNG variants, a note from the company stated.
