BHEL commissions Hindujas' 520 MW thermal project near Vizag

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has announced it has commissioned a 520 MW coal-based thermal generating unit of the Hinduja Group near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The unit has been commissioned at the 2x520 MW Vizag Thermal Power Project of Hinduja National Power Company Ltd, Visakhapatnam.

The Vizag thermal power project is being executed by BHEL on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. This project is located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal and uses a single-flow condenser and sea water as the main cooling tower.

The project was severely affected by cyclone Hudhud in 2014 while it was under construction. Restoration work was carried out by BHEL and the first unit has been commissioned successfully. The second unit of the project is at an advanced stage of completion.

BHEL recently secured orders for setting up two supercritical thermal power projects of 800 MW capacity each in Andhra Pradesh.

The projects are the 1x800 MW Dr Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station Stage–V of AP Genco and the 1x800 MW Sri Damodaram Sanjeeviah Thermal Power Station State-II (Krishnapatnam supercritical thermal power project) of AP Power Development Company Ltd.

Thus far, BHEL has commissioned 5,010 MW of power plants in the utility sector during the financial year 2015-16.
