Coconut product exports increase 13.5% in 2014-15

Coconut products exports have registered a 13.5 per cent growth during 2014-15 at Rs.1,312.38 crore against Rs.1,156.12 crore.

The share of activated carbon alone in the exports was Rs.558 crore, which has recorded a slight decrease in quantity as well as in value.

The domestic price of shell charcoal, the raw material used for the production of activated carbon continued at a reasonably high level, which affected the competitiveness of the product in the international market and has resulted in the decline in export of the product.

The same trend is expected to continue in the coming year also since the domestic price of shell charcoal is continuing at the same level, a statement issued by Coconut Development Board said.

The export of dry coconut to Pakistan during the year FY-14 was to the tune of Rs.183.06 crore. However, virgin coconut oil exports recorded a significant increase in quantity and value. From a meagre Rs.4.81 crore worth export in 2013-14, the figure has gone up to Rs.24.72 crore.

The increasing trend is likely to continue in the current fiscal also. From the 815.97 tonnes of exports, it is expected to reach at least 2,000 tonnes in 2015-16.
